Welcome to all the beautiful opportunities awaiting us as we begin again in 2025. This year I am focusing on the opportunity to be more still and notice when I can soften into the space between my busyness and tasks in work and life. I am excited for my “work” to be integration of intentional rest and saying “no” more often. I am looking forward to MORE freedom with LESS guilt about doing less. Simply put, I want to have more consistent focused intention in my thoughts and actions.
I find that when I am focused on only one thing at a time, my awareness of the present moment expands, and my breath naturally slows. Noticing the gap between my inhale and exhale and pausing there for just a few seconds adds such sacred space and freedom in my lungs and heart. This translates to my day feeling more spacious as well. It sounds simple. Yet it is easy to become distracted , and then find that we are going through the motions to get through the day.
Our breath and the quality of our breath is connected to the state of our nervous system. When we are anxious or depressed, or inattentive, our breath can become shallow and rapid. This respiratory rhythm directly affects our central nervous system and can activate a “fight, fight , freeze , fawn” response, causing our heart rate to increase and tension in our muscles. (The nervous system interprets the rapid breathing to be a threat or danger). This is why it is essential to learn how to breath in ways that support the health and optimal functioning of our nervous system. Breathing with intention and in supportive ways has a powerful impact on the quality of our lives.
We can begin again with each breath. Inspired by our inhale and surrendering and letting go on our exhale. A perfect cycle of breath is available to us around 22,000 times a day. So many opportunities to pause and to be renewed!
